The GR Yaris Cup Spain reaches its halfway point with the iconic Rallye Rías Baixas

The GR Yaris Cup Spain 2025 reaches its third round of the season this weekend at the Rallye Recalvi Rías Baixas, one of the most historic events on the national calendar. After the first two races of the year, held in Lorca and Sierra Morena, the one-make cup organized by Toyota Spain and Motor & Sport Institute (MSi) reaches its halfway point with a tight championship battle and many questions yet to be answered.

In Córdoba, during the recent Rallye Sierra Morena, José Lamela and Unai Conde (Breogán Motor) claimed their first victory in the GR Yaris Cup after a demanding rally marked by several retirements. Their win, coupled with the retirement of Sergi Francolí (CSM Automoció), allowed them to take the lead in the championship. The event also saw the first podium finishes for Adrián Díaz (Breogán Motor), who came second, and Daniel Remuiñán (Breogán Motor), third, completing a historic 1-2-3 for the Galician team. Joan Socias and Enrique Velasco (Astur Híbrido) finished fourth, while Laia Sanz and Luka Larrosa (CSM Automoció) secured fifth place in their first-ever asphalt rally.

For this edition of the Rallye Rías Baixas, the drivers from Breogán Motor will be competing at home. Both José Lamela, Daniel Remuiñán, and Adrián Díaz will race backed by the local fans, giving them both knowledge of the terrain and an extra boost of motivation from the Galician crowd that, once again, is expected to line the stages. This local advantage makes them strong contenders for the win in a key round for their title hopes.

Meanwhile, Sergi Francolí (CSM Automoció) will aim to score the maximum number of points—both in the overall standings and from each stage win—to close the gap to the leaders. His task becomes even more pressing with the notable absence of Josep Bassas, who has been unable to repair his car following his crash in Córdoba. However, the Catalan driver is expected to return in September.

The Galician rally will also feature Alejandro Cachón and Borja Rozada, who return to the national scene after competing in the demanding Acropolis Rally, part of the World Rally Championship (WRC). The Asturian duo will take part in Vigo, driving the Toyota GR Yaris Rally2, aiming to gain more asphalt mileage and continue their development within the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Spain and Teo Martín Motorsport project.

The itinerary for the 58th Rallye Recalvi Rías Baixas kicks off on Friday, July 4, from the service park in Samil, at 4:00 p.m., with two consecutive runs of the stages Ponte Caldelas-Barbudo (SS1 and SS3) and Ponte Caldelas-Vilarchán (SS2 and SS4). The day will wrap up in the Policarpo Sanz parc fermé at around 11:38 p.m. On Saturday, July 5, the action resumes at 10:25 a.m. with the special stages Vigo-Nigrán (SS5 and SS9, the latter as the GR Plus stage), Gondomar-Porriño (SS6 and SS10), and Salceda (SS7 and SS11), with service stops in Samil and regroupings in Porriño. The Vigo O Castro urban stage (SS8 and SS12) will complete the route before the rally finishes at 8:20 p.m. In total, competitors will face 129.54 timed kilometers, spread across 12 stages.

One unique feature of the GR Yaris Cup Spain will be seen on Friday afternoon, following the first two stages and the regrouping in Ponte Caldelas. At that point, only the drivers and co-drivers themselves will be allowed to change tires and carry out basic maintenance on their GR Yaris RZ Cup cars. This regulation, exclusive to Toyota’s one-make cup, encourages self-sufficiency and direct involvement with the vehicle.

As a prelude to the rally, an official presentation will take place on Thursday, July 3, at 6:30 p.m., at the Breogán Motor dealership in Vigo. All drivers and co-drivers competing in the GR Yaris Cup Spain will attend, as well as Alejandro Cachón and Borja Rozada, who will share their thoughts and speak with the media in a relaxed and friendly setting. The presentation will serve as a gathering point for teams, media, and fans—strengthening the bond between the Toyota cup and the local community.

With the season at its midpoint, the Rallye Rías Baixas stands out as a decisive event to shape the title aspirations of the main contenders. The competitiveness among teams and the continuous development of the drivers promise an exciting show on Galician roads.

After two rounds, the overall standings of the GR Yaris Cup Spain show Breogán Motor dominating the field. José Lamela and Unai Conde lead with 43 points, followed by teammates Daniel Remuiñán and Álvaro Cerqueiras with 37, and Adrián Díaz with 31. Josep Bassas (IPPON Motor Vallès) and Sergi Francolí (CSM Automoció), who started the year strong, round out the top five with 24 and 23 points, respectively. Among the rising talents, Samuel Vera (Toyota Kobe Motor) also stands out as he continues his learning journey in the category.
